• The street and sidewalk project at the elementary school is about to get underway. The board approved a warranty deed with the City of Groton. The deed gives the city seven feet to widen the street to the north of the the school. This is one of the narrowest streets in town and sees a lot of traffic as the busses and parents vy to pick up and drop of students each day. It was also suggested that the school move ahead with the sidewalk along the west side of First Ave between the elementary and the high school. The city and the school are working on a grant to pay for this project and had planned to wait to see if they received the grant. However the archi

tect stated that it would be better to include the project now on the bid specs for the whole project as an addendum. This way the school would have the bids if they decided to go ahead.
• Groton School Superintendent Laura Schuster told the board that Groton is one of 12 projects still in the running for the grant and stated that the school needed someone to go to Pierre on May 8 to present the plan.
• The building and grounds committee presented the proposed capital outlay budget for the 2012-2013 school year. Business Manager Mike Weber stated that with the property values changing, especially in Brown and Day Counties, he is hoping to leave the mil levy where it is, with a small increase in the mil levy for special education, as that program is continuing to grow.
• Schuster reported that not all the problems with the chimney have been resolved. It seems that when the school switched to natural gas, the chimney was never lined. This is causing damage to the mortar around the bricks and leaving gaps and holes. This will be resolved by inserting a metal sleeve around the interior of the chimney and raising the height of the chimney. The sleeve should stop the damage to the chimney and the raising of the height should improved the air quality within the school.
