University hosts feature of original SD first lady
• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The wife of South Dakota's first governor will be featured in a performance by a scholar in Brookings. • Joanita Kant will portray Margaret Mellette Tuesday. The performance will be broadcast on the Dakota Digital Network. • Mellette's husband, Arthur, was the last governor of the Dakota Territory and the first governor of South Dakota. • The Mellette's moved to Dakota Territory from Indiana in 1879. They built their brick home four years later in Watertown. It's now called the Mellette House. • The first South Dakota first lady served from 1889 to 1893. She outlived her husband by 42 years. • The performance begins at 7 p.m. on the South Dakota State University campus. •
Added housing help available for flooding, tornado
• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Some South Dakotans hit by recent flooding and a tornado can receive added help from the state for damages to their property. • Qualified residents of Canton and Wessington Springs can apply for a grant up to $5,000 from the Housing Opportunity Fund. • The money can be used for cleanup, restoration, a hot water heater, furnace or appliances, rental payments and utility deposits or a down payment for replacement housing. • The state says federal assistance and insurance proceeds will factor into how much is awarded. • Households at or below 80 percent of the Housing and Urban Development area median income for Lincoln and Jerauld counties are eligible to apply. • SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- The Minneapolis attorney representing the six same-sex couples challenging South Dakota's gay marriage ban is asking a judge to bypass a trial and issue a ruling. • Attorney Joshua Newville filed a motion for summary judgment last week in U.S. District Court in Sioux Falls.
