Woman guilty of not paying taxes on dance income
• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- Federal jurors in Sioux Falls have convicted a woman of not paying taxes on more than $600,000 earned from exotic dances over four years. • Court documents show 42-year-old Veronica Fairchild, of Canistota, and Okoboji, Iowa, was found guilty last week of four counts of tax fraud. • Each charge carries a maximum penalty of three years in custody and a $250,000 fine. • Prosecutors say she filed late tax returns in 2010 from 2005 through 2008 and claimed the unreported income from performing private shows as an exotic dancer was a gift. • Fairchild could not be reached and her defense attorneys did not immediately return phone calls seeking comment. •
SD woman sentenced to 130 years in boys death
• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- A 23-year-old Gann Valley woman has been sentenced to 130 years in prison for beating to death a 4-year-old boy because he wet his pants. • Donika Gonzales has been ordered to serve 130 years for first-degree manslaughter and 15 years for aggravated assault. The sentences will run concurrently. Attorney General Marty Jackley and Brule County States Attorney David Natvig announced the sentencing Tuesday afternoon. • The charges stem from an abuse incident on Feb. 21, 2013, that resulted in the boy's death. The boy was not Gonzales' son. • This case was investigated by the Buffalo County Sheriff's Office and the Division of Criminal Investigation and prosecuted by the Attorney General's Office and the Brule County States Attorney. • Gann Valley is about an hour west of Mitchell. •
Business survey: Midwest, Plains economy growing
• OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- The economy in nine Midwestern and Plains states should continue growing steadily in the months ahead, according to a monthly survey of business leaders released Tuesday. • The region's overall economic index crept up to 60.6 in June from May's 60.5 to hit another three-year high. • Creighton University economist Ernie Goss, who oversees the survey, said the (Continued on page 15)
