Last Workforce Summit Tuesday in Sioux Falls
• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- Gov. Dennis Daugaard and other state leaders plan to hold the last of several Workforce Summits Tuesday in Sioux Falls. • The goal of the sessions was to discuss ways state, community, business and education leaders can improve South Dakota's workforce. • Earlier sessions were held in Mitchell, Watertown, Brookings, Rapid City and Aberdeen. • Tuesday's session runs 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Sioux Falls Convention Center •
Governor to speak at USD arena groundbreaking
• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Gov. Dennis Daugaard will speak at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion when officials break ground for a new volleyball and basketball arena Tuesday afternoon. • The 6,000-seat arena will eventually be connected to the DakotaDome where most of the university's sports are currently played. Construction of the arena will take place with a new academic building for physical therapy and related programs. An outdoor soccer and track facility also is planned. • The University of South Dakota athletics recently ascended into NCAA's Division I. The new USD facility is expected to cost $66 million, much of which came from donors. • South Dakota State has plans to upgrade its football stadium. •
Severe thunderstorms move across eastern SD
• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- Severe thunderstorms moved across parts of eastern South Dakota, northwest Iowa and into southwest Minnesota on Monday, causing flooding in some areas. • The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls said torrential rainfall along with large hail affected much of those areas, particularly southeast of a line from Hurley to Sioux Falls and on into Jeffers, Minnesota. The strongest storms came down east of Interstate 29. • Sioux Falls officials reported street flooding, downed trees and power outages. • The Department of Public Safety issued a statement Monday night saying offi (Continued on page 19)
