School of Mines gym to be named for former leader
• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology says a two-court gymnasium being built at the Rapid City school will be named for former president Harvey Fraser. • Fraser died last November at the age of 97. He had served as the school's president from 1966-1975. • The new gym is expected to be complete by early next year. It will be part of the new 24,750-square-foot Stephen D. Newlin Family Student Wellness & Recreation Center. • The school with the help of alumni donors also is creating academic and athletic scholarships to honor Fraser. •
Large military training exercise underway in SD
• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- About 4,400 soldiers from around the world are in western South Dakota for a large-scale training exercise. • The South Dakota National Guard's 30th annual Golden Coyote exercise started its two-week run in the Black Hills on Saturday. Participants have come from across the country and also from Canada, England, Denmark and Germany. • Soldiers are simulating military operations, conducting humanitarian missions and doing engineering projects as they work to enhance their skills. •
Rapid City mayor names new police chief
• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- Rapid City Mayor Sam Kooiker (KWAY'-kur) has named Lt. Elias Diaz as the city's new police chief. • If the City Council confirms the appointment, Diaz will assume his new duties on June 16. He'll replace Steve Allender, who recently retired after three decades in law enforcement. • Diaz has been with the Rapid City force since 1998, serving in various capacities. Kooiker says he has a "wealth of experience." He also holds bachelor's and master's degrees from The Masters College in Santa Clarita, California. • As police chief, Diaz would oversee a staff of 153 full-0time employees, including (Continued on page 24)
