SD teen wants murder case moved to juvenile court
• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- Attorneys for a Watertown teenager charged in a fatal shooting in Sioux Falls want his case moved to juvenile court. • Eighteen-year-old Trevor Kruthoff was 17 when he was charged with murder in adult court in the Dec. 2 shooting death of 20-year-old Jordan LeBeau and the wounding of his 48-year-old father. Authorities say the shooting resulted from a botched robbery attempt. Several others also are charged. • Kruthoff's parents said in court Thursday that he is a good kid who was hanging out with the wrong group of friends. • Kruthoff is accused of firing the shot that killed Jordan LeBeau. Prosecutors say his age at the time doesn't diminish the severity of the alleged crime. • The hearing was continuing Friday. •
Rapid City appoints interim police chief
• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- The mayor in Rapid City has appointed an interim police chief, with the current leader of the force retiring. • Mayor Sam Kooiker (KWAY'-kur) has selected current Assistant Chief Karl Jegeris to lead the department on an interim basis. • Chief Steve Allender has retired after three decades with the department. Family, friends, fellow officers, firefighters and National Guard soldiers held a procession Thursday to honor him as he headed home. • Jegeris has served as assistant chief since 2012. He has worked at the department for 18 years. • Rapid City is interviewing candidates to fill the police chief position. The timeline of the decision is unclear. •
High school students get to try out college life
• ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) -- About 50 high school students will be on the Northern State University campus starting next week as part of an annual summer program. • The Upward Bound Summer Program gives students in grades 9-12 a six-week college experience. They stay in residence halls and take high school courses in science, math, reading, writing and Spanish. Students also visit various other col (Continued on page 15)
