"We live our lives as an example of what he was." • Craig Nelson, who played for Meyer from 2003-2008 at Northern State, said the thousands who came to honor Meyer were there because of more than just his coaching record. • "I would argue a Division II basketball coach would not garner this type of celebration just for being a basketball coach," he said. • The public memorial service was held on the gym floor of the Barnett Center, where Northern State hosts its basketball games. • A second service will be held June 1 at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee, where Meyer also coached. •
SD Highway Patrol ready for busy travel season
• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota Highway Patrol is out in force as Memorial Day marks the kick-off of the summer travel season. • Superintendent of the Highway Patrol Col. Craig Price says their presence reminds motorists to use common sense. He says seeing law enforcement helps encourage good habits while driving. • The Highway Patrol is participating in the "Drive to Save Lives" all year. The program is an effort with 40 other states to reduce traffic fatalities. • Patrols also participated in "Operation Safe Summer Kickoff" Friday to encourage safe driving. Most of the state's uniformed officers saturated the roads, educating people and enforcing traffic laws. •
3 die in head-on collision west of Bowdle
• BOWDLE, S.D. (AP) -- Three people, including an infant, were killed Friday evening in a two-car crash west of Bowdle, South Dakota. • South Dakota Highway Patrol Trooper Rick Olauson says three passengers in one car died in what appears to be a head-on collision. • Michael Muonio, of Battle Ground, Washington state, was driving one of the cars and died on the scene. A six-month-old infant and 19-year-old Lorissa Bellikka both survived the crash, but later died at hospitals. Both were from Washington as well. • The American News in Aberdeen reports (http://bit.ly/1k4P5eD ) 66-year-old Kaster Unser, of Ipswich, was driving the other vehicle involved in the crash.
