Today in Weather History

1965: A tornado hit north of Frederick. A barn and all outbuildings were destroyed on one farm. Windows exploded outward at the house. The tornado was estimated to be on the ground for about 5 miles.
1974: Softball size hail fell in Kennebec, breaking many windows in the schools and other buildings.
1957: An F5 tornado touched down southwest of Kansas City, then traveled 71 miles into the suburbs. The tornado killed 45 people and left a path of near-total destruction in its wake. A canceled check from Kansas City was blown all the way to Ottumwa, IA, a distance of nearly 200 miles.
1996: In Niagara, Ontario a tornado struck a drive-in theater that was about to show the feature movie, Twister.
2013: A 1.1 mile wide EF5 tornado tore directly through Moore, OK on its 14 mile long path. Twenty-four people lost their lives, including 7 children at Plaza Towers Elementary School. It was the third time in 14 years that Moore had been directly hit by a violent tornado, two of which were F5/EF5 and the other was an F4.
