The program is made possible through a grant from the South Dakota Humanities Council, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. • Mellette was born in Indiana in 1843. He was appointed territorial governor in the spring of 1889 and was elected governor of South Dakota that fall. He served as governor until 1893. • Timm has been performing living history portrayals of Mellette at schools and museums, to organizations, and at church and community celebrations statewide since 1999. He became interested in Mellette when he was a costumed docent at the Pettigrew Home and Museum in Sioux Falls. • "The more I was able to read about him, the more intrigued I became," Timm said. "He had great success and disappointments. When he came to Dakota Territory in early 1879, settling in Springfield, he had much to offer the territory. At 36 years of age, he had a superior education from the University of Indiana in Bloomington, Ind., had experience as a lawyer, county superintendent of schools, newspaper editor, publisher and member of the Indiana State Legislature. He was a recognized authority on school law and common school district organization. Furthermore, he was a Civil War veteran, an important frontier credential. Although he had done very well in Muncie, Ind., Margaret, his wife, was seriously ill and they were forced to leave Indiana's damp climate."
