SD governor appoints transportation commissioner
• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard has appointed a new member to the state's transportation commission. • The Department of Transportation announced Wednesday that Kathy Zander of Pierre has been chosen to serve a four-year term. She will succeed Sam Tidball who served for 20 years on the commission. • Zander is the executive director of the South Dakota Agri-business Association and the South Dakota Grain and Feed Association in Pierre. She has a degree in agronomy from South Dakota State University. • Transportation Secretary Darin Bergquist says Zander's understanding of the transportation challenges in a rural state will benefit the commission. • The commission has eight other members. •
Man accused of killing fiancee gets life sentence
• CHAMBERLAIN, S.D. (AP) -- A man accused of fatally shooting his fiancee in rural Chamberlain has been sentenced to life in prison without parole after changing his plea to guilty. • The 37-year-old Kent Davidson pleaded guilty to first-degree murder on Wednesday at the Brule County Courthouse. • Authorities contend Davidson shot Crystal Schulz in the head on March 11, 2013. Her body was found three days later in a shed at her mother's place. • He was arrested in Sioux Falls hours later after a standoff with police. • Davidson and Schulz were engaged, but court documents say Schulz was ending their relationship. •
Regents name new Black Hills State president NORA HERTEL, Associated Press
• SPEARFISH, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota Board of Regents named a new president of Black Hills State University Wednesday in front of a packed and cheering room in the student union. • The board selected Tom Jackson Jr. to be the university's tenth president, replacing current president Kay Schallenkamp. • Jackson is the vice president for student affairs at the University of Louisville.
