SD dedicates next week to soil, water stewardship
• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakotans are being asked to consider soil and water conservation next week as part of a stewardship event declared by Gov. Dennis Daugaard. • The theme for the week is "Dig Deeper: Mysteries in the Soil." It draws attention to the fungi, protozoa, earthworms, bacteria and other microorganisms in the earth. • Bill Smith says those elements support life as we know it. Smith is a program administrator with the state's Department of Agriculture. • In his proclamation establishing the event, Daugaard says few understand soil and most take it for granted. • A mobile app called "soilweb" can teach curious stewards about the soil in their area. • The campaign is part of an effort by the National Association of Conservation Districts. •
