Sioux Falls police recover evidence in homicide
• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- Sioux Falls police say they have recovered a knife and gloves they believe were used in a homicide. • Authorities earlier had asked the public for help in finding the items. The Police Department issued a statement Thursday night saying they had been located. • Police believe the items were used in the Wednesday stabbing death of 53-year-old Brenda Hansen. Forty-one-year-old John Senn is charged with murder and being held on $1 million cash-only bond. • Authorities allege that Senn took prescription painkillers from Hansen and argued with her before stabbing her. •
SD gets nearly $310K for specialty crop grants
• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture says South Dakota this year is getting nearly $310,000 for grants to develop specialty crops. • The federal funds were authorized under the 2014 farm bill. • The federal government defines specialty crops as fruits and vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, and horticulture and nursery crops. • The focus of the grants is to enhance the competitiveness of the crops by improving production efficiency, reducing distribution costs and developing new seed varieties. • The grants are expected to be awarded later this year. •

• BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- BNSF Railway Co. will add trains in the Dakotas, Minnesota and Montana solely for transporting fertilizer for spring crop planting, the railroad has told a federal oversight board. • "Simply put, we are working to deliver high volumes of fertilizer into the marketplace as quickly as we can," the railroad said in a mandated response to the Surface Transportation Board that was released Thursday. • The federal board this week ordered BNSF and Canadian Pacific Railway to report their plans by Friday to ensure delivery of fertilizer shipments this spring. • BNSF beat the deadline.
