Clark boy accused in nonfatal stabbing of girl
• CLARK, S.D. (AP) -- A boy from Clark is accused of stabbing a girl, but she survived the attack. • It happened early Tuesday at a home in Clark, which is 30 miles west of Watertown. • Authorities say the 17-year-old was arrested on one count of attempted murder, which carries a maximum punishment of 25 years in prison. He's in jail on $250,000 bond. • The medical condition and age of the girl who was stabbed were not released. • • Jury picked to decide if SD man gets death • SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- Lawyers have chosen a jury to decide whether a man should get the death penalty for killing a Sioux Falls woman as part of a plot to assassinate the president. • Opening statements are scheduled for Wednesday in the case against 43-year-old James McVay. • He pleaded guilty but mentally ill to first-degree murder for the July 2011 stabbing death of 75-year-old Maybelle Schein. • McVay was arrested in Madison, Wis., and said he killed Schein and stole her car as part of a plot to drive to Washington and assassinate the president. • Ten men and five women will serve as a jury and three alternates. • They'll decide if McVay qualifies for the death penalty and, if so, whether he deserves to die by lethal injection or spend life in prison. •
Report: SD Indian casino revenue up 14% in 2012 CARSON WALKER, Associated Press
• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota's Native American-owned casinos had among the fastest revenue growth nationwide in 2012, according to a report that also found spending nationally at tribal casinos slowed that year. • Revenue at the 13 Indian gambling facilities operated by nine tribes in the state rose about 14 percent in 2012, to $124 million, said Casino City's Indian Gaming Industry Report. • The increase is likely due largely to a state law change that took effect July 1, 2012, that gave Deadwood and Indian casinos the option of raising maximum bet (Continued on page 28)
