Crazy Horse to commemorate autism awareness day
• CUSTER, S.D. (AP) -- The Crazy Horse Memorial will light up in blue this week to commemorate World Autism Awareness Day. • The special lighting will take place at 10 p.m. Wednesday. • Admission to the memorial in western South Dakota will be waived after 5 p.m. to anyone making a monetary donation or giving three canned goods to a food drive benefiting the Feeding South Dakota food bank. • The Empire State Building in New York and the Sydney Opera House in Australia are among the buildings that have previously light up in blue. • Officials with the memorial say the awareness day is meant to celebrate the unique talents and skills of individuals with autism. •
Regents spokeswoman tapped for university center
• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The spokeswoman for the South Dakota Board of Regents will also lead the center that offers college classes in Pierre. • Janelle Toman has been named executive director of Capital University Center. • She'll continue her duties as director of communications for the Regents, which she has done since 2002. • The center is one of three off-campus higher education centers in South Dakota. The other two are in Sioux Falls and Rapid City. • Toman moved to Pierre in 1981 as a reporter and editor for United Press International and later entered public service. • She replaces Ron Woodburn, who recently retired as executive director. •
SD Attorney General glad of new tool to fight meth
• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley has applauded the Legislature and governor for approving a measure establishing electronic records of cold medicine sales to mitigate meth production. • Jackley championed the bill. The measure will become law in July. It calls for retailers who sell cold and allergy medicines with particular ingredients to enter customer information into a tracking system.
