Great Lakes to stop service to 2 ND airports
• BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- Great Lakes Airlines will suspend service to two more North Dakota locations by the end of the month. • The Wyoming-based company says it is suspending service to the Dickinson and Williston airports. It pulled out of Devils Lake and Jamestown at the end of January. • Great Lakes has said it is pulling out of several regional airports because of problems retaining pilots. The company has cited new federal rules that require co-pilots to log 1,500 flight hours before they can work for commercial airlines. They previously required 250 hours. • The new regulations have also affected Great Lakes flights in Pierre, S.D. The shortage of pilots caused about 17 percent of flights to be cancelled in February in Pierre. •
Veterinarian: virus affecting pigs in 25 SD farms
• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- A virus that state health officials say kills one in 10 piglets has been detected in 25 farms in South Dakota. • State veterinarian Dusty Oedekoven says the farms have been officially certified with the Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome. • The virus does not affect humans. KELO-AM (http://bit.ly/1iX8ZhM ) reports the virus has run rampant in Iowa and Nebraska. There is no vaccine to prevent the virus from spreading. • Oedekoven says the strain was first detected in the U.S. in April. He says bio-control standards are being put in place to keep the virus from spreading to other farms. • The official says the cost of pork is likely to go because of the virus' high mortality rate. •
Grasslands offers use of grouse viewing blinds
• FORT PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Fort Pierre National Grasslands is making three grouse viewing blinds available from early April until the end of May. • The blinds, which require reservations, have small square viewing windows for observing and photographing birds as they dance and boom on their displaying (Continued on page 16)
