SD Senate revives bill limiting traffic camera use
• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota Senate has brought back and passed a measure regulating red-light traffic cameras after it was killed in committee. • Senators voted 26-9 to support the bill. • The main sponsor of the bill Rep. Peggy Gibson says it was "revived and revised." The Huron Democrat has been working on this legislation for years. • Senators amended the bill to address problems raised by the committee. It now refers only to unmanned, red-light cameras. It prohibits cities from contracting with private corporations to monitor the devices. • Gibson says devices with radars and cameras can issue tickets to the wrong person and violate the constitutional right to due process. • It now goes back to the House for approval. •
SD Senate passes gambling expansion on to voters
• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota Senate has passed a proposed constitutional amendment that would allow Deadwood casinos to offer roulette, keno and craps. • Senators on Wednesday voted 25-10 to support the measure. • South Dakota voters will choose whether to authorize the change to the constitution in the November general election. • Opponents of the measure say gambling addiction has caused harm to state residents and shouldn't be expanded. • Supporters say Deadwood casinos need new games to enhance and reinvigorate their offerings to compete with gambling in neighboring states. They say it draws tourists and supports the state economy. •
Landowners file lawsuit over Missouri River floods JOSH FUNK, Associated Press
