SD Senate panel discusses Common Core study
• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- A South Dakota legislative panel is discussing a measure that would set up a study of the Common Core standards now being used for math and English in the state's school districts. • The Senate Education Committee holds a hearing Tuesday on the bill. • The proposal would create an appointed council to compare the Common Core standards with the standards previously used by South Dakota. It also would compare new tests with ones used previously. • The Common Core standards, adopted by 45 states, were developed in an initiative started by the governors and chief education officers of the states involved. • Critics say the standards could take away local control of schools. Supporters say the standards set rigorous standards to establish what students should know in math and English in each grade. •
