Nebraska-Omaha defeats South Dakota State 80-71
• BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) -- Marcus Tyus scored 13 of his 16 points in the first half as Nebraska-Omaha rolled to an 80-71 victory Saturday over South Dakota State. • Tyus scored Nebraska-Omaha's first seven points to give the Mavericks a 7-6 lead, and they led the rest of the way. South Dakota State could only pull within four points, 48-44 with 13:02 remaining. Nebraska-Omaha had an 11-point lead twice in the second half. • CJ Carter scored eight of his 15 points from the line with less than a minute to play for Nebraska-Omaha (11-7, 1-2 Summit League). Justin Simmons scored 12 points for the Mavericks. John Karhoff added 11. • Brayden Carlson made 12 of 12 free throws on his way to a career-high 26 points to lead South Dakota State (10-9, 2-2). Carlson was 2 of 3 from 3-point range, but the Jackrabbits shot just 3 of 19 from beyond the arc. •
Airmen from Ellsworth AFB headed to Afghanistan
• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- About 350 airmen from Ellsworth Air Force Base are heading to Afghanistan for another round of deployment. • The group from the 28th Bomb Wing replaces 350 airmen of the 7th Bomb Wing based at Dyess Air Force Base, which is Ellsworth's sister base in Texas. • Lt. Col. Seth Graham, commander of the 34th Bomb Squadron, tells the Rapid City Journal (http://bit.ly/1afDVWH) that the group includes airmen who have been in the Air Force for a matter of months and others who have been deployed up to eight times. • The airmen fly B-1 bombers that are used to attack targets at the request of U.S. (Continued on page 18)
