Madison water declared safe to drink again
• MADISON, S.D. (AP) -- It's OK to drink the water in Madison again. • The city's 6,500 residents were told to stop using it late Wednesday when a concrete-and-dirt roof collapsed into an underground well that feeds the city's water towers, which contaminated the water. • Schools canceled classes Thursday, and bottled water was trucked into town as crews worked to clean up the mess and restore water service. • Residents were told late Thursday they could use the water for showering and doing laundry. • Then on Friday the city said the water was tested at the Sioux Falls Health Lab and deemed safe for all purposes. •
New commissioner named for SD softball association
• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- Gary Young of Watertown has been named the next commissioner of the South Dakota Amateur Softball Association. • Young got started with ASA/USA Softball in 1974 as a men's fastpitch player, and started umpiring the following year. In 1979, he was appointed the Northeast South Dakota Area fastpitch commissioner. He became the umpire-in-chief for northeast south Dakota in 1980. • He is succeeding Bill Maher, who is stepping down after nearly half a century at the helm of the state association, which oversees more than 2,000 teams. •
