"I'm flabbergasted." • Only a few hardy souls braved the cold on the Nicollet Mall in Minneapolis, normally a busy pedestrian area. Many people downtown used the extensive heated skyway system, where it is warm enough to walk around in office attire. • Nearly all stores on the skyway were open as usual. Jersey Devil Pizza & Wings was not. • "Apologies ... We are East Coast wimps. Too cold! Stay safe, see you Tuesday," read a sign taped to the door. •
Missing female SD inmate back in prison
• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- An inmate who didn't return to a work release center in Sioux Falls is back at the South Dakota Women's Prison in Pierre. • Courtney Mitchell turned herself in to law enforcement in Sioux Falls last week and appeared in court on a second-degree escape charge. • The 25-year-old didn't return to the Minnehaha County Correction Center after a shift at her work release job on Dec. 27. • She's serving a four-year sentence for grand theft out of Lincoln County and a one-year sentence for possession of a controlled substance in Minnehaha County. •
Rapid City man gets 45 years for killing man
• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- A Rapid City man is going to prison on a 45-year sentence for shooting to death another man. • Charles Birds Head was earlier convicted of manslaughter for killing 33-year-old Eustacio Maruffo last January in the parking lot of the South Dakota Rose Inn. • Circuit Judge Wally Eklund sentenced the 31-year-old on Monday to 45 years for that crime. At the same time, he'll also serve two years for possession of a controlled weapon, 25 years for distribution of a controlled substance to a minor and five years for possession. •
