DCI: Pierre officer was right to use Taser on girl
• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- State investigators concluded that a Pierre police officer was justified in using his Taser on an 8-year-old girl in October. • The Division of Criminal Investigation report was released Tuesday. It echoes a Pierre Police Department review that found the officer followed procedure because the girl was suicidal and turned a knife toward the officer. • The state report indicates the girl was eventually shocked with the stun gun because it was the safest method to defuse the situation. She was not seriously injured. • The state's attorney says she's satisfied with the investigation and won't pursue charges against the officer or the girl. •
South Dakota inmate dies after long illness
• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- A 43-year-old state prison inmate has died in Sioux Falls. • The state Department of Corrections says Matthew Casey died Tuesday at a Sioux Falls hospital following an extended illness. • He was serving a 15-year sentence out of Minnehaha County for first-degree robbery. • The Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating, which is standard procedure in the death of an inmate. An autopsy will be done. •
SD governor appoints tribal member to state Senate
• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Gov. Dennis Daugaard on Tuesday appointed a member of the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe to the South Dakota Senate. • Chuck Jones, 42, of Flandreau, will succeed Republican Sen. Russell Olson, of Wentworth, who stepped down this fall to take a new job. • Jones is general manager of the Royal River Casino in Flandreau. He also has served as a city administrator in Flandreau, and is an Army veteran who served overseas during the Persian Gulf War in the early 1990s. • "He has been a leader in his community and, as a veteran, he understands the importance of public service," Daugaard said.
