• Don't procrastinate: Avoid waiting until the last minute to shop so you will have time to shop around and compare prices and take advantage of sales.
• Make your own gifts: Give some homemade gifts, such as cakes, cookies or gift certificates for your services/time.
• "This could include babysitting for young couples, running errands, cooking a meal, or doing handyman work," she said. "Older relatives don't need more chocolates, but could use help with a chore, running errands, or a ride to appointments. Maybe some would just appreciate your company."
• Keep it simple: Substitute expensive get-togethers and elaborate holiday dinner parties with inexpensive entertainment at home, such as a neighborhood potluck meal or an evening of caroling.
• "We are living in tough economic times, and no one should be spending money they do not have," Slunecka said.  "Being financially responsible this holiday season is a gift to yourself and to those you care about."
