1st dark matter experiment results to be announced
• LEAD, S.D. (AP) -- Scientists are announcing the first results of an experiment that is searching for dark matter in a lab nearly a mile underground at the former Homestake gold mine in South Dakota's Black Hills. • Physicists working in the Large Underground Xenon (ZEE'-non) project, called LUX (Luhks), planned to announce their initial results Wednesday at a seminar in Lead. The LUX experiment seeks to detect dark matter in a hall 4,850 feet underground in the Sanford Underground Research Facility. • Dark matter is thought to be a predominant form of matter in the universe that reveals itself through its gravitational effect. • The research facility says a leading candidate for dark matter is called the weakly interacting massive particle, or WIMP. The LUX experiment is searching for WIMPs. •
Prosecutors weigh death penalty in SD killing
• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- Prosecutors say they'll decide over the next month whether to seek the death penalty should a Rapid City man be convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend and her unborn child. • Thirty-two-year-old Michael Young is accused in the April 2012 stabbing death of Morgan Myers, who was pregnant with Young's child. Authorities say Myers died in the parking lot of a Rapid City Wal-Mart. • Young has pleaded not guilty to charges including first-degree murder and fetal homicide. • Pennington County State's Attorney Mark Vargo says he'll announce his decision on pursuing the death penalty at a Dec. 2 hearing on pretrial motions. • Should Young be convicted he would face a minimum sentence of life in prison. •
New Mount Rushmore quarter to be released
• KEYSTONE, S.D. (AP) -- The Shrine of Democracy will soon fit in your pocket. • The new Mount Rushmore National Memorial quarter will be released Nov. 6 at a ceremony at the National Guard Armory in Custer. • Collectors will be able to swap cash for $10 rolls of the new quarter and buy uncirculated Mount Rushmore quarter sets. • It's the 20th coin in the U.S. Mint's America the Beautiful Quarters Program that (Continued on page 27)
