SD recruits companies that make medical devices
• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota economic development officials are attending an event in Minneapolis to recruit companies that make medical devices. • Representatives of five South Dakota communities are joining the state Governor's Office of Economic Development at the Medical Design and Manufacturing Exposition on Tuesday and Wednesday. • State Economic Development Commissioner J. Pat Costello says South Dakota can offer medical device companies a productive workforce and a good business and tax climate. • Representatives from Aberdeen, Mitchell, Yankton, Sioux Falls and Vermillion will attend the event to meet with out-of-state companies that might expand or relocate their operations to South Dakota. • South Dakota already has 25 businesses that are engaged in making medical devices and equipment. Those companies employ more than 26 percent of the state's workforce in bioscience. •
Yankton hosts first events to mark SD statehood
• YANKTON, S.D. (AP) -- Yankton was the capital of Dakota Territory and will host the first events tied to South Dakota's 125th anniversary of statehood in 2014. • The free activities planned for Saturday include a walking tour of historic sites, a social hour with the governor, lieutenant governor and their wives and a statehood ball at which people are encouraged to wear clothing from the period. •
