SD National Guard cancels training due to shutdown
• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- About 3,600 South Dakota Air and Army National Guard members won't have to show up this weekend for training because of the partial government shutdown. • The Guard says it cancelled a scheduled drill assembly due to the lapse in federal appropriations. It will likely be rescheduled for Oct. 26 and 27. • Not all South Dakota National Guard units are affected by the decision. Units preparing for an upcoming mobilization will still train and some units were scheduled to drill on other weekends in October. • The National Guard says it remains available for call-up for a natural disaster or state emergency, despite the funding shutdown. • There are currently more than 200 state soldiers and airmen serving in combat in Afghanistan or deployed to the Middle East. •
Preschooler found but mom still missing from SF
• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- A 3-year-old boy has been found, but his juvenile mother is still missing after leaving a residential treatment program in Sioux Falls earlier this week. • The state says the boy was initially dropped off at a friend's home Wednesday and has since been reunited with family members. • He was with his mother, Kimberly Guerra, on Tuesday evening when she left a program that serves pregnant women and mothers with small children. • Kimberly is 17 years old and Hispanic. She's 5 feet, 2 inches tall and weighs about 135 pounds. She has black hair and brown eyes. •
Rapid City police get grant to hire 4 officers
• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- Rapid City Police Chief Steve Allender says a $500,000 federal grant will allow his department to hire four officers to combat a growing crime problem in the western South Dakota city. • Allender tells the Rapid City Journal (http://bit.ly/19kbBRb ) the grant will delay the expense to taxpayers. The Department of Justice grant will cover the salaries and benefits of four officers for the next three years. • The department is seeking applicants for the four new positions.
