Guitarist Slash to rock with Sioux Falls kids
• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- Rock guitarist Slash plans to take the stage later this month in Sioux Falls with kids from the local Boys and Girls Clubs. • He'll appear Sept. 28 at Brennan Rock & Roll Academy with a student band that chose to play the Guns N' Roses version of the Bob Dylan classic "Knocking on Heaven's Door." • Slash was the lead guitarist for Guns N' Roses before embarking on a solo career. • Academy owner and Dollar Loan Center CEO Chuck Brennan met Slash earlier and told him about the music program. • The student concert will feature three student bands that have been learning how to play instruments and rehearsing since the academy opened in April. • The concert is not open to the public. •
Work to begin for $4.6M Rapid City soccer complex
• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- The Rapid City Council has approved a $1.7 million contract for the first phase of work at a future soccer complex in the northeastern part of the city. • The work includes an extension of the city's water main, and irrigation and seeding of the $4.6 million, 12-field complex. • The city has approved about $3.8 million for the project from sales tax revenue. A local soccer group will need to raise the rest privately. •
SD governor requests flags be flown at half-staff
• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Gov. Dennis Daugaard is asking that all flags in South Dakota be flown at half-staff through sunset Friday in honor of the victims of a mass shooting at the Washington Navy Yard in the nation's capital. • The request is in accordance with a proclamation issued by President Barack Obama. • Authorities are still trying to figure out why a former Navy reservist opened fire inside a building at the Navy Yard on Monday, killing 12 people before being killed himself.
