SD wheat, oats and barley harvesting coming to end
• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- It was another hot, dry week for South Dakota crops, except in the north-central part of the state, which got some much-needed rain. • The National Agricultural Statistics Service says topsoil moisture supplies for the week ending Sunday were 13 percent very short, 42 percent short, 44 percent adequate and just 1 percent surplus. • The winter wheat, spring wheat, oats and barley harvests are all nearing an end. • Corn at the mature stage was 1 percent, behind 16 percent last year and the 5 percent average. • Soybeans are behind last year in setting pods but ahead of average. • Sunflower blooming was 98 percent, near last year and equal to average. •
USD men's basketball coach David Boots retiring
• VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) -- The University of South Dakota head men's basketball coach is retiring after 25 years in Vermillion. • David Boots is the winningest coach in program history, posting a 503-235 record for a win percentage of 0.681. • The 57-year-old led the Coyotes to 23 consecutive winning seasons from 1989-2011, 10 NCAA Division II tournaments, six North Central Conference championships and back-to-back Elite Eight appearances in 1993 and 1994. • At the Division I level, Boots won a Great West Championship in 2010, which culminated with a berth in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. • Boots amassed 618 wins in 32 seasons as a head basketball coach. He holds the 14th-most wins in Division II history (603) and is a seven-time conference coach of the year honoree. •
