Vandals strike United Tribes campus in Rapid City

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- Vandals struck the Rapid City campus of United Tribes Technical College over the weekend, three days after the Bismarck, N.D.-based school held a grand opening celebration for its Black Hills Learning Center.
• Officials say the vandals targeted doors and windows early Saturday and caused as much as $75,000 in damage. Police are investigating.
• A $5,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest.
• Classes at the school are scheduled to begin Aug. 26.

SD lawmakers to show cattle at State Fair in Huron

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- About 15 state lawmakers are expected to try their hand at showing beef cattle at the South Dakota State Fair.
• The event on Aug. 31 in Huron is the fifth annual Legislative Beef Show.
• It is a friendly competition that pairs lawmakers with youth livestock exhibitors from their legislative districts. The youth partners prepare the animals for competition and offer legislators a crash course in livestock showmanship.
• The lawmakers then compete in showing the animals in the show ring. Sen. Shantel Krebs of Renner won the event last year.
• State Agriculture Secretary Lucas Lentsch says the friendly competition helps lawmakers understand the hard work that young people put into showing livestock at the State Fair. He says it also gives young people a chance to meet members of the Legislature.

Run of live music in eastern SD starts this week

• MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) -- From rock and country to Christian, live music lovers in eastern South Dakota have plenty of options in the next couple of weeks.
• The Corn Palace Festival in Mitchell is the first of several events. Country superstar Dwight Yoakam kicks it off Thursday. The festival runs through Sunday.
• The South Dakota State Fair in Huron is Aug. 28 through Sept. 1. Among the bands on stage this year are 3 Doors Down, the Eli Young Band and Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers.
• Travis Tritt performs at the Fort Randall Casino and Hotel near Pickstown Aug.
