Authorities: At least 4 dead, others wounded in Dallas-area shootings; suspect in custody

• DALLAS (AP) -- A series of shootings in the Dallas area killed at least four people and wounded others, but authorities said early Thursday that a suspect was in custody.
• Police were first called to a home in southwest Dallas around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday where they found four gunshot victims, two of whom had died, Dallas police Sgt. Warren Mitchell told media outlets.
• The suspect in that shooting fled to nearby DeSoto, where he was involved in another shooting, Mitchell said.
• At the second location, four other people were shot, with two of them dying, DeSoto police Cpl. Melissa Franks said.
• Franks said police took the suspect into custody at the scene of the second shooting. Authorities said the suspect is a male but have not released any other information about him.

Pentagon plan would grant benefits to same-sex spouses but deny them to unmarried gay couples

• WASHINGTON (AP) -- Same-sex spouses of military members could get health care, housing and other benefits by the end of August under a proposal being considered by the Pentagon. But earlier plans to provide benefits to gay partners who are not married may be reversed.
• A draft Defense Department memo obtained Wednesday by The Associated Press says the department instead may provide up to 10 days of leave to military personnel in same-sex relationships so they can travel to states where they can marry legally.
