Charlie Stenholm of Texas also spoke to the summit, saying that farmers, ranchers and agricultural business owners need to play a bigger role in setting economic and environmental policies. Those in agriculture must explain their needs and views to the 94 percent of Americans not involved in farming or ranching, he said. • "We in agriculture have tended to play defense for way longer than we should have," Stenholm said. • Stenholm, who was on the Agriculture Committee throughout his 26 years in the House, said the House's failure to pass a Farm Bill last week is an example of how Congress has lost the ability to compromise. He said the bill failed because of a disagreement on spending for food stamps, but House committees have not held detailed hearings to examine that program. •
Man found dead in Rapid City died naturally
• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- Authorities say a man found dead in a drainage ditch in Rapid City last month died of natural causes. • Police say final autopsy results show that 65-year-old James Tracke died of heart disease, and their investigation is closed. • Employees at a car dealership discovered Tracke's body on May 20. His last known address was in Pine Ridge. •
Group overseeing Sanford Lab getting new leader
• LEAD, S.D. (AP) -- A new leader has been named for the group that oversees an underground laboratory in western South Dakota where scientists are conducting complex experiments. • Mike Headley on July 1 is replacing Ron Wheeler as executive director of the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority, which operates the Sanford Underground Research Facility near Lead with support from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California and the federal Energy Department. • Wheeler is moving into the role of director of governmental and external affairs. • "I'll help maintain our strong relationships with federal agencies, Congress, universities and the state of South Dakota," he said. • Headley has been serving as laboratory director, a position he will maintain while also leading the authority. • "I'm honored that Ron Wheeler and the board of directors have entrusted me (Continued on page 23)
