Damaging Friday storms in SD packed 2 tornadoes
• ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) -- The National Weather Service says storms that caused widespread damage across central and northeastern South Dakota last Friday packed straight-line winds and at least two tornadoes. • The agency says two brief tornado touchdowns were confirmed -- about 8 miles northwest of Miller and about 2 miles northwest of Carpenter. A weather service team is still assessing damage. • Widespread tree and home damage has been reported in the Lake Poinsett and Watertown areas. Sixty-three-year-old Deborah Larson, of Sioux Falls, was killed when winds damaged her Lake Poinsett mobile home. •
Woman pleads guilty in reservation stabbing death
• BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- A woman accused of stabbing her boyfriend to death last fall on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation in the Dakotas has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. • U.S. Attorney Timothy Purdon says 23-year-old Alisha Crow Ghost, of Cannonball, faces up to life in prison when she's sentenced in federal court in Bismarck on Sept. 30. • Authorities say Crow Ghost stabbed Cole Harrison in the chest last Nov. 10 after a night of drinking and arguing. •
SD universities changing teacher education model
• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota's public universities are changing their teacher education programs so students will spend a full year teaching in a school district before graduating. • The state Board of Regents says college students training to be teachers traditionally have been student teachers for a semester before graduating. Black Hills State University has been requiring those students to be student teachers for an entire year, and other universities are adopting that requirement. • Officials say university faculty members are working to redesign bachelor's degree programs for teachers to take into consideration a full year of student teaching. •
