New North Star conference names commissioner
• VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) -- A former coach at Valley City State University has been named commissioner of the new North Star Athletic Association. • Cory Anderson is a former head baseball coach and assistant football coach for the Vikings. He most recently served as executive director of the James River Family YMCA in Jamestown. • The new NAIA conference is being formed by five schools in the Dakotas -- Dakota State, Jamestown College, Mayville State, Presentation and Valley City State. Dickinson State will become a member next year. •
US agency pays $5.6 million to SD local government
• WASHINGTON (AP) -- Sen. Tim Johnson says the U.S. Department of Interior has designated more than $5.6 million that will go to 31 South Dakota counties as payment in lieu of property taxes. • Johnson says the Black Hills National Forest, national grasslands and national parks are tremendous assets to South Dakota, but they pay no local property taxes. He says payments in lieu of taxes give communities additional money to support schools, county roads and other services. • Payments in lieu of taxes go to counties that contain non-taxable federal land. •
National Guard museum extends summer hours
• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota National Guard Museum in Pierre says it is expanding its summer hours. • Starting July 1, the museum will open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the first Tuesday and the third Thursday of the months through September. Normal museum hours are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday. • Director Sonja Johnson says the museum showcases weapons, uniforms and other artifacts carried or worn by South Dakota Guardsmen from the Civil War to the Gulf War. • Johnson says the expanded hours will allow both travelers and residents who work until 5 p.m. a chance to visit. •
