Attempted murder trial postponed in South Dakota
• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- An attempted murder trial scheduled to begin this week in Rapid City has been postponed after the defendant's attorney withdrew from the case. • Twenty-one-year-old Kelsey Reavis is accused of shooting 28-year-old Christopher Levin in the head with a handgun after a confrontation at a house party in April 2012. Levin has since recovered. • Reavis has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and alternate counts of aggravated assault. • Defense attorney Betsey Harris recently learned she previously represented a state witness in the case. The judge has appointed a new defense attorney, Jon Murphy. The trial start has been pushed back to Sept. 3. •
SD Trail of Governors project in Pierre expanding
• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Life-size bronze statues of former South Dakota Govs. Frank Farrar, Harvey Wollman and William Janklow will be unveiled at the state Capitol Rotunda in Pierre next week. • The celebration of the latest additions to the Trail of Governors project is scheduled for 1 p.m on June 14. Gov. Dennis Daugaard is to participate in the ceremony along with every living former governor: Farrar, Wollman, Walter Miller and Mike Rounds. • The statues eventually will be added to the trail that's being formed throughout downtown Pierre and the Capitol grounds. • Each statue is funded by individual or business donations. • The Trail of Governors Foundation plans to erect three statues each year. The first three were unveiled last year -- former Govs. Arthur Mellette, Harlan Bushfield and Miller. • "We believe this project is a gem in so many ways, from educational, cultural and tourism enrichment, to providing a recreational activity in walking or jogging along the trail," foundation President Rick Jensen said in a statement. "It is enjoyed by those who live here as well as our visitors." • The South Dakota Community Foundation is handling donations for the $2 mil (Continued on page 15)
