Crazy Horse commemorates 65th anniversary
• CRAZY HORSE MEMORIAL, S.D. (AP) -- Crazy Horse Memorial is commemorating the 65th anniversary of the dedication of the monument with several activities in June. • Monday marks the 65th anniversary of the dedication of the Crazy Horse Memorial and the first mountain blast. • It's also the 15th anniversary of the dedication of the finished carved face of Crazy Horse. • A blast will take place on Tuesday at 11 a.m. to commemorate the anniversary. • The summer's weekly performance and lecture series starts on Thursday and runs through Aug. 29. • Two night blasts are scheduled for later in the month to commemorate the anniversary of the 1876 Battle of the Little Big Horn and Memorial CEO Ruth Ziolkowski's (jew-uhl-KUFF'-skee) birthday. • The memorial is a mountain carving in progress that will honor Oglala Lakota warrior Crazy Horse. •
2 men killed in Corson County crash on Sunday
• MOBRIDGE, S.D. (AP) -- Two men were killed in a one-vehicle crash in Corson Count over the weekend. • The South Dakota Highway Patrol says 61-year-old James Joseph Olesen, of Hot Springs, was driving east on 110th Street Sunday morning when he lost control of his vehicle and it rolled into a ditch. Olesen and a passenger, 56-year-old Michael Hatlestad, of Pierre, were thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene. Neither man was wearing a seatbelt. • The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigation. • • Wet conditions continue to hamper farmers in SD • SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- Cool wet conditions have prevented farmers and ranchers in South Dakota from making progress planting crops. • The U.S. Department of Agriculture says in its weekly crop report that producers had on average only 2.1 days suitable for fieldwork. • Winter wheat conditions were rated 34 percent very poor, 24 percent poor, 31 (Continued on page 16)
