Man charged in scissors attack at Wahpeton store
• WAHPETON, N.D. (AP) -- A South Dakota man is jailed on charges of attacking a female store clerk in Wahpeton and cutting her neck with a pair of scissors. • Police Chief Scott Thorsteinson said 20-year-old Christopher Brent Yellow Earringsm of Peever, S.D., was charged Friday with six counts of felonious restraint along with one count each of reckless endangerment and preventing arrest. • Yellow Earrings requested a court-appointed attorney. He is being held in the Richland County Jail, and his bond was set at $500,000 cash. • Thorsteinson said Yellow Earrings entered the Family Dollar Store around 8 p.m. Wednesday and forced six employees and customers into a back room, threatening them with an open pair of scissors. Yellow Earrings then blocked the door with heavy objects, the chief said. • Yellow Earrings then assaulted a female clerk with the scissors, causing a cut on her neck that required stitches, authorities said. She was taken to a hospital where she was treated and released. • Thorsteinson said officers arriving at the scene witnessed Yellow Earrings assaulting the clerk and twice used a stun gun. • Police Officer Michael Smykowski suffered a lacerated thumb and back injury during the scuffle. He was treated and released at a local hospital, the chief said. • Yellow Earrings also was taken to a hospital and treated for "possible drug intoxication," Thorsteinson said. • All eight charges Yellow Earrings faces are each punishable by up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine. •
South Dakota homeland security director retiring
• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota Homeland Security Director James Carpenter announced Saturday that he will retire. • Carpenter has served as the agency's director since 2010. His retirement is effective June 8. • Carpenter says he wants to do more hunting and fishing and spend more time with his family. • Carpenter is a South Dakota Highway Patrol veteran who has served in state (Continued on page 18)
