• Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon declared a state of emergency because of "rapidly rising rivers" and activated the Missouri National Guard for deployment to threatened Mississippi River towns.
• And in Michigan, Midland County Sheriff Scott Stephenson said a "major" rupture emerged in the Kawkawlin Dam, a 12-foot breach sending water through the structure. There were no reports of injuries.

SD salmonella outbreak associated with baby chicks

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota health officials are reporting an outbreak of salmonella associated with baby chicks.
• The department says that three cases have been reported in the southeastern part of the state and one in the southwest. One case was a child younger than 4 and the others were adults.
• Children are especially susceptible because they frequently put their fingers into

their mouths and because their immune systems are still developing.
• Early symptoms of Salmonella include fever, diarrhea and abdominal pain. Bloodstream infections can be quite serious, particularly in the very young or elderly.
• Officials recommend that residents wash hands thoroughly after handling poultry.

South Dakota cattle on feed down 10 percent

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota feedlots with capacities of 1,000 or more animals had 230,000 cattle on feed on April 1, down 10 percent from last year.
• The Agriculture Department says in its latest report that placements in feedlots during March totaled 32,000 head, down 29 percent from 2012.
• Marketings of fed cattle during the month totaled 31,000 head, down 35 percent from last year. The number marks the lowest March marketings since 1998.

South Dakota milk production up 0.6 percent

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- Milk production in South Dakota during January, February and March was up 0.6 percent from the first quarter of 2012.
• The Agriculture Department says production during the first quarter of 2013 in
