Huron lawyer appointed magistrate judge in SD
• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota Supreme Court has appointed a Huron lawyer to be a new magistrate judge in a judicial circuit that covers 14 counties in the eastern part of the state. • Carmen Means will be sworn in on Friday. • Means graduated from Madison High School in 1985, received an undergraduate degree at Georgetown University, and then obtained a law degree from Creighton University in 1993. She worked as a public defender and recently was in private practice in Huron. • The 3rd Judicial Circuit includes Beadle, Brookings, Clark, Codington, Deuel, Grant, Hamlin, Hand, Jerauld, Kingsbury, Lake, Miner, Moody and Sanborn counties. •
Memorial run at Black Hills State honors student
• SPEARFISH, S.D. (AP) -- Black Hills State University is holding its annual memorial run in memory of a former BHSU student killed in a 1984 car accident. • The Kevin Whirlwind Horse Memorial Run honors Whirlwind, who was raised around horses and was an avid rider. It's held each year in conjunction with the Lakota Omniciye spring powwow. • The race begins at 10:30 a.m. Sunday and is open to people of all ages. • All proceeds go to Kevin Whirlwind Horse Memorial Scholarship Fund. •
Daskotas tribe holding hearings about foster care
• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe is hosting two hearings about Native Americans in the foster care system ahead of a planned summit next month. • The tribe is hosting a pre-summit hearing April 20 at the Grand River Casino in Mobridge, S.D., and another one on April 26 at Prairie Nights Casino in Fort Yates, N.D. • The Bureau of Indian Affairs is holding a summit in May in Rapid City to address concerns raised by tribal members. • At the hearings, relatives of children in the foster care system will be able to (Continued on page 16)
