Former SD teacher sentenced for sexual abuse

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- A Rosebud man convicted of sexually abusing a child he helped teach at the town's elementary school is heading to federal prison.
• Sixty-five-year-old Benjamin Murphy was sentenced this week to three years in custody to be followed by two years of supervised release.
• U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson says the abuse happened in December 1999. Murphy wasn't indicted until last August, and he pleaded guilty in January.

Ellsworth training flights grounded to cut costs

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- B-1 bomber training flights at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota are being grounded as part of larger Air Force efforts to save nearly $300 million.
• The military is halting training operations for 12 active-duty fighter and bomber squadrons across the U.S. The budget-cutting move doesn't affect active military operations.
• Ellsworth officials say the base will focus on non-flying training such as simulators until the end of the fiscal year on Sept. 30.
• Ellsworth bombers that are deployed in support of combat operations will continue to fly.

Spring storm that killed 3 moving to the Carolinas

• SHUQUALAK, Miss. (AP) -- A powerful spring storm unleashed tornadoes, hail and high winds as it swept through the Midwest into the Deep South, leaving three people dead and thousands without power before heading for the Carolinas early Friday.
• The storm marched from Louisiana to Georgia on Thursday, killing one person in Mississippi, where a twister was spotted. A tornado also was reported in southeastern Tennessee, prompting authorities to declare a state of emergency.
• While tornado watches for the Atlanta area had been lifted by early Friday, they remained in effect for parts of the Carolinas.
