Olson wins third term as mayor

• Six years ago Roy Olson threw his hat in the ring for mayor of Groton. It was a snowy day in 2007, but there was a 37 percent voter turnout as Olson got 70 percent of the vote. Olson ran unopposed in 2010. This year, the weather was cold but the snow did not fall in the Groton area. There was a 31 percent voter turnout yesterday with Olson getting 59 percent of the vote. Olson defeated challenger Kevin Nehls, 193-133.
• In Ward 2 where there was also a councilman election, there was a 37 percent voter turnout with Olson getting 66 votes and Nehls 51. There were three ballots where they voted for the mayor, but not for a councilman. In the other two wards, there was a 31 percent voter turnout with Olson getting 127 votes and Nehls 82.
• Eddy Opp won re-election in Ward 2 with a 63-51 win over challenger Ron Belden.
• There were 21 absentee ballots cast with six coming from Ward 2 and 15 from the other two wards.
• Olson and Opp were the incumbents.
