Farm Rescue gets largest grant in history: $348K
• JAMESTOWN, N.D. (AP) -- The North Dakota-based Farm Rescue organization is getting a grant of nearly $348,000 from a charitable trust established by the late hotel and real estate baroness Leona Helmsley. • The nonprofit Farm Rescue provides planting and harvesting help free of charge to farm families in five states who have experienced a major illness, injury or disaster. Officials say the grant from The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust will be used for equipment purchases and general operations. • Farm Rescue founder and President Bill Gross says it's the largest grant the nonprofit has received since it began operations in 2006. • Farm Rescue has helped more than 200 farm families in the Dakotas, Montana, Minnesota and Iowa. •
USD women's basketball team makes WBI semifinals
• VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) -- The University of South Dakota women's basketball team has moved into the semifinals of the Women's Basketball Invitational. • The Coyotes beat Lamar 71-48 in the quarterfinals on Sunday. USD will host a semifinal matchup with McNeese State on Thursday night. • If the Coyotes win they will play at either Pennsylvania or Detroit in the championship next weekend. • USD got an invite to the WBI after losing to rival South Dakota State in the championship game of the Summit League Tournament and losing out on a spot in the NCAA tournament. •
SD Legislature holds final day of annual session
• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota legislative leaders expect a short working session when lawmakers meet for the final day of this year's legislative session. • The main item facing the Legislature on Monday is Gov. Dennis Daugaard's veto of a measure that would increase a fee imposed to fund the state's inspection of commercial fertilizer.
