Board tables five member board possibility

• Groton School Board members discussed the possibility of moving from a 7-man board to a 5-man board during their meeting on Monday. The discussion started at the last meeting and was based on the fact that few people had taken out petitions to run for the board during this year's election.
• There will not be an election for school board this year, but there will be a new member. Incumbents Dorene Nelson and Lars Hanson turned in their petitions. In

cumbent Steve Schaller did not turn one in, but former head janitor, Merle Harder, did turn his petition in for the three-year school board position.
• While reducing the size of the board would also reduce the number of people needed to run for election each year, the reduction would also limit the number of people being able to represent any given area.
• Since all the positions will be filled this next year, it was decided to table the discussion for now and see what the future election needs would be.
• The board is still watching a few bills in the state legislature this session. The primary bill is the so called School Sentinel Program bill. This bill allows for a school employee to carry a gun in school, during school hours. This bill is moving through the senate, it has already been passed in the house.
• Two other bills are also being watched by the board. One would allow changes to how capital outlay money could be used and one on the use of pension funds.
• Approval was given by the board to hire Duane Fliehs as a part time custodian at

2013 Groton Area Elementary
Kindergarten Screening
Feb. 25 - March 1

Parents of children ages 3-6 not yet attending school are asked to contact Heidi Krueger at the Groton Area Elementary School during school hours at 397-2317 to set up a screening time.

Kindergarten Screening will take place at the Groton Area High School Gymnasium.  Please park and use the east entrance to the gym.
