Fire bills need to be paid

• Unpaid fire bills were again the topic of discussion at the monthly fire board meeting. There are still several fire bills that are uncollected from the last year. Some landowners have refused to pay their bills outright, while others have just ignored the billings.
• The board set a new policy stating that if bills are not paid after six months from the date of service, a letter from the board's lawyer will be sent to the individual, giving them 30 days to pay the bill. If the bill remains unpaid, the board will pursue legal means of settling the bill by taking the party to small claims court.
• The fact that Groton is now a fire tax district does not mean that property owners cannot be billed for fire calls. The fact that the Groton Fire Department, and now the Bath Station, receives tax money only means that money is available to them to maintain a fire department. The tax money does not pay for the cost of materials used to fight the fire or for materials used to protect the firemen answering the call. The recycling trailer is in Groton. It is located at the city shop at 10 East Railroad Ave. Don't forget, there is also a dumpster at the city shop for aluminum cans with the proceeds going to the pool.

Kindergarten Screening
Feb. 25 - March 1

Parents of children ages 3-6 not yet attending school are asked to contact Heidi Krueger at the Groton Area Elementary School during school hours at 397-2317 to set up a screening time.

Kindergarten Screening will take place at the Groton Area High School Gymnasium.  Please park and use the east entrance to the gym.
