Study says SD agriculture has $21 billion impact
• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- An associate professor at South Dakota State University says agriculture and related industries had a $21.4 billion impact on South Dakota's economy in 2010. • Gary Taylor, an associate professor of economics, says the impact includes more than $8.3 billion in direct agricultural production, $3.4 billion in inputs supplied by businesses and nearly $1.7 billion from increased household spending. • Agricultural processing and manufacturing added more than $8 billion in economic activity. • Taylor says agriculture's total $21.4 billion economic impact makes agriculture the largest single sector in South Dakota's economy. He says agriculture makes up about 19.8 percent of the state economy's total output. •
Programs seeks to train musicians on Pine Ridge
• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- A unique program on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation aims to give Oglala Sioux youth an outlet through music. • Independence Through Music matches young musicians on the Pine Ridge reservation with experienced, well-established Native singers and songwriters to learn the ropes of the music business. That includes everything from how to properly hold a microphone to planning a tour and creating a marketing plan. • Davidica Little Spotted Horse started the program two years ago. Little Spotted Horse is a professional musician who lives on Pine Ridge. • She says the program is meant to teach the youth how to become passionate about something. • Participants are selected through an audition process, and workshops are held over a two-month period with performances planned on the reservation and a chance to record a CD. •
