2 arrests made in Pierre-area vehicle thefts
• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Authorities have made two arrests in a string of vehicle thefts in the Pierre area. • Six vehicles were stolen Wednesday from sites in Pierre, Fort Pierre and Hughes County. Officials say all of them were recovered but some were damaged and one was destroyed by fire. Police say more vehicles might be involved. • An 18-year-old man from Pierre and a 19-year-old man from the city are in custody. •
Strong winter storm bears down on the Dakotas
• BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- Residents of the Dakotas are preparing for a winter storm that could dump as much as a foot of snow in some areas. • The National Weather Service has posted a variety of advisories and warnings, including a blizzard warning in eastern North Dakota through Saturday morning. Forecasters say freezing rain will turn into snow, and strong winds will blow it around and make travel hazardous. • The North Dakota Transportation Department has issued a travel alert through Saturday morning, urging motorists to use caution. KEVN-TV reports officials in cities in western South Dakota's Black Hills on Thursday were getting snowplows ready. • Many residents headed to stores Thursday to stock up on essentials. Janet Knodel tells WDAY-TV in Fargo that she bought items such as milk in case she gets snowed in. •
7 SD libraries accredited in tiered system
• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- State officials say seven South Dakota public libraries have been accredited in the past year under a new tiered system. • The South Dakota State Library accredits public libraries as providing services at the essential, enhanced or exemplary levels. • The Brookings Public Library has been accredited at the exemplary level. • The Custer County Library and the Edgemont Public Library were accredited at the enhanced level.
