cally. Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEAs) are free wireless notifications that are delivered to your mobile device as part of a new public safety system provided by Authorized Senders. They are designed to inform you of imminent threats to safety or missing persons alerts in your area. In order to receive WEAs, you must have a capable device and be located in an area (e.g., county) targeted by Authorized Senders to receive the alert. • I was not sure if my Iphone 4 would receive these notices. There were conflicting reports. Apple said they would. The carriers said they may not receive the alerts. So I was happy to get the notification. If you are one thinking, "I don't have a clue what you are talking about," that means either your phone is not capable of receiving the alert or your cellphone provide does not participate in these WEAs. • As far as my research went earlier this summer, most of the cooperatives in South Dakota had opted out to offer this service. But just for your information, if your phone is capable of receiving these WEAs, you will not get them locally, but you could get them in other parts of the country while traveling.
