Time change prompts check of smoke alarm batteries
• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota Fire Marshal Paul Merriman says people should check the smoke-alarm batteries in their homes to mark the change from daylight savings time to standard time. • The switch was official at 2 a.m. Sunday. • Merriman says that in addition to setting their clocks back an hour, people should check their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. • The state fire marshal says that a majority of deaths in home fires could be prevented if all homes had working smoke detectors. • Merriman says smoke detectors have a test button. When that button is pressed, it should make a sound to indicate the batteries are fine. • Merriman says anyone who doesn't have a smoke detector should install one. •
State may offer fewer spring wild turkey licenses
• MADISON, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department is proposing to reduce the number of wild turkey licenses this coming spring by just over 500 tags. • The department is looking to offer residents 105 less one-tag male turkey and 200 less two-tag any turkey licenses for the prairie unit. Licenses would remain unlimited in the Black Hills unit. • The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Commission plans to hold a public hearing on Dec. 6 in Pierre before voting on the proposal. • Proposed season dates are April 13 through May 19, with the archery season starting a week earlier. •
1st movie theater opens on Pine Ridge reservation
• KYLE, S.D. (AP) -- The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation has its first movie theater. • Nunpa Theatre opened Friday night in Kyle after three years of planning and construction. • The theater will be showing two movies each week Thursday through Monday. (Continued on page 19)
