SD man pleads guilty to involuntary manslaughter
• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- A South Dakota man has pleaded guilty to killing another person while driving drunk. • U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson announced Thursday that 23-year-old Dino Kane, of St. Francis, pleaded guilty to a charge of involuntary manslaughter. • Prosecutors say Kane had a blood alcohol concentration more than three times the legal limit for driving when he rolled his vehicle on Aug. 4 and killed another person. Kane was also injured in the crash. • Kane faces eight years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 4. •
NE woman pleads guilty to theft from tribal casino
• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- A Nebraska woman has pleaded guilty to embezzling from a Native American casino. • U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson announced Thursday that 36-year-old Michelle Carrier of Valentine, Neb., pleaded guilty to charges of wire fraud and theft. • Prosecutors say Carrier, who is also known as Michelle Witt-Moore, embezzled money while the payroll clerk at the Rosebud Casino from February 2008 to June 2009. • Carrier faces 20 years in custody and a $250,000 fine for the wire fraud charge. She faces 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for the charge of theft from a gaming establishment on Indian lands. • Sentencing is set for Jan. 3. •
S. Dakota sees increase in whooping cough cases
• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- State health officials say whooping cough cases are on the rise in South Dakota. • The South Dakota Department of Health says in a news release that whooping cough cases are up 87 percent over the five-year median. Fifty-six cases have been reported as of Oct. 3. Health officials say most of the cases are in (Continued on page 19)
