Donation boosts funds for Sioux Falls ice complex
• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- Sporting goods retailer Scheels has donated $750,000 to an ongoing effort to build a new community ice facility in Sioux Falls. • The gift is part of the Ice Sports Association's plan to raise $7.7 million, mostly from private sources, to build the first phase of an indoor ice complex with three sheets of ice and other spectator amenities. • Ice Sports Association president Joe Zueger says the facility will now be named the Scheels IcePlex. • On Tuesday, the Sioux Falls City Council approved $1.5 million for the new facility. • Plans are to break ground on the center in late 2013, with an anticipated opening date in the fall of 2014. •
SD governor orders flags at half-staff
• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard has ordered all state government agencies to fly flags at half-staff in honor of the victims of the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya. • The attack by extremists on Tuesday killed four State Department employees, including American ambassador to Libya John Christopher Stevens, and wounded three others. • The directive is in accordance with one from President Barack Obama. It is in effect until sunset Sunday. •
Funeral scheduled for salon shooting victim
• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- Memorial services have been scheduled for a 24-year-old woman fatally shot in front of a Sioux Falls hair salon. • A funeral service for Amanda Connors will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Reformed Church in Sioux Falls, with burial later that day. • Visitation will be Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Church of the Good Shepherd in Jackson, Minn., and one hour prior to the Sioux Falls service. • Police say Connors managed the Cost Cutters salon. She was killed Tuesday trying to protect an employee from the employee's boyfriend. • Authorities say Tyrone Smith shot Connors before locking himself in the store (Continued on page 35)
