Peter Bauman named new SDSU Extension Range Management Field Specialist

• Brookings, S.D. -  Peter Bauman has been named SDSU Extension Range Management Field Specialist, and will be stationed at the SDSU Extension Regional Center in Watertown.   The appointment is bending Board of Regents approval.
• "We are truly excited to obtain a person with Pete Bauman's experience for this position," said Dave Willis, Head of the Natural Resource Management Department at SDSU. "He has been managing grasslands and cattle grazing in eastern South Dakota for the past 15 years."
• Bauman earned a B.S. (1996) and M.S. (1998) in Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences from South Dakota State University. His M.S. thesis involved seasonal movements, home ranges, and control methods for elk in Wind Cave National Park.     

• Pete grew up on a family farm in southern Minnesota. He has been employed by The Nature Conservancy (TNC) from 1998 to 2012 in a variety of positions, including most recently as the Director of Community Based Conservation and Land Steward for the Prairie Coteau Program Office. He also served as the Fire Manager for TNC.
• Bauman managed grasslands and grazing on 15 TNC properties in South Dakota and Minnesota and has worked extensively on outreach efforts for private land management. He has participated extensively in learning communities on fire, grazing, and prairie restoration. He helped build a private lands controlled burning program known as the Prairie Coteau Habitat Partnership over the past decade.
• In his position as Extension Range Field Specialist, Bauman will continue both outreach and research activities. He will be highly involved in applied research on conservation grazing as well
