Lightning sparks 4 small wildfires in Black Hills
• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- Lightning sparked several small wildlfires in the Black Hills as dry weather persists in the region. • The Great Plains Fire Information office says all four fires on Thursday were contained. The largest was only seven acres, which is less than a square mile. • South Dakota Public Radio reports that the Turkey Hill Fire to the west of Rapid City burned within a half mile of some homes. •
SD US House candidates will debate Aug. 22
• BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) -- The two candidates for South Dakota's lone seat in the U.S. House will meet in a debate Aug. 22 to discuss agricultural issues. • The debate between Republican Rep. Kristi Noem and Democratic challenger Matt Varilek will be held in Mitchell as part of the annual Dakotafest farm show. • The event is being hosted by South Dakota State University and the South Dakota Corn Growers Association. It is the first confirmed debate between the congressional candidates.
